Valuing Ecosystem Services in Vermont: Flood Mitigation and The Otter Creek Wetlands

Following Hurricane Irene, Rutland Vt experienced more severe flooding than Middlebury, which lies downstream of Rutland on Otter Creek. This difference has largely been attributed to role of the Otter Creek wetlands in storing flood water and releasing it downstream gradually. We will present the preliminary results of a study seeking to quantify the value, in economic terms, of the Otter Creek wetlands in preventing flood damages to Middlebury following Hurricane Irene.
