The Real Thing: Modernism and American Painting
10/13/2016
Presented by John R. Stomberg, Virgina Rice Kelsey 1961s Director, Hood Museum of Art. Taking the three paintings on loan from the Hood Museum of Art as the central focus, this talk explores the enduring emphasis on “the real” in American painting throughout the era of modernism. While entirely different in so many ways, Georgia O’Keeffe, Ivan Albright, and Alex Katz each balanced abstraction, expression, and realism in a manner that shaped the art of their time.
