After his introduction, the first lecturer in this series is Professor Fred Wiseman, the chairperson of Anthropology at Johnson State College. He discusses Vermont's prehistory and how to teach about the Abnaki culture. Teachers need to understand who the Abenaki were and are today. His lecture focuses on three areas: the historical content from archaeological, geographic and prehistorical points of view; their philosophy which includes religion, lifeways and local history; and their politics including local people's points of view and the vested interests which often are in conflict with the Abenaki people.
