Artist statement: I have been creating and building sculptures since I was a child. In my early twenties I sold my first major piece, a copper female giraffe. The second life-size copper male giraffe was commissioned before I’d finished my first. I was also commissioned to build a Ferrari, the original body was in a state of deterioration beyond repair. With the use of old photographs I reconstructed a new body essentially made the old way, hand-formed a piece at a time. I was commissioned by RPM, my father and brother own the restoration business and it’s where I learned sheet metal forming, welding and just about everything to do with metal. Building intense large-scale animals sometimes calls for a bit of relaxation. My wire forms, my stone building, the furniture and working with the local school on creating Trash Man have been wonderful interludes among the large lumbering animals.
