Norton is a self-taught artist, who has successfully sold his whimsical animal sculptures for over 20 years. In the 1970s, he moved near a wildlife refuge, where he spent much time walking and birdwatching. Out of this grew a need to surround himself with birds and animals of the area.

Norton's work is carved in white pine, which he gets from a local sawmill. Smaller pieces are whittled; larger ones are carved from planks using bandsaws, sanders and chainsaws, and are then doweled and glued together. Norton makes each piece himself.
