An Illustrated Trip Through American Popular Song

Philip Furia is a leading authority and writer on American popular song and poetry. Among his books are The Poets of Tin Pan Alley: A History of America’s Great Lyricists, and biographies of Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin and Johnny Mercer. Furia taught for 25 years at the University of Minnesota, where he was chair of the Department of English and an associate dean.

He is currently a professor in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Outlets for his writing and discussions of popular songs range from academic publications, like The American Scholar and the Library of Congress, to All Things Considered and Fresh Air with Terry Gross. His presentation will include clips of songs and from films. Stellar pianist and vocalist, Daryl Sherman, will sing some of the famous songs, which will be illustrated by movie clips.
