Dr. Fred Wiseman discusses the Abenaki people during the 17th and 18th centuries. He calls the early contact century as the "diplomatic period" where the Abenaki tried to work within the structure. The 18th century he notes is the "defense of the Abenaki," where they tried to keep their power to govern themselves.  After that the Abenaki begin to disappear from the historic record.  So Abeaki continuity is very important at various levels of government He conclude his talk with the current perceptions about the Abenaki and other native Americans and their need for sovernity.
