After being largely ignored in the early days of the War of 1812, Champlain became the focal point in 1814 hosting the last major naval engagement of the war. It has been described as the most significant engagement of the conflict, influencing the very outcome of the war. Although no one will dispute the ferocity of the battle in Plattsburgh Bay on September 11, in many ways it was a war of broadaxes, fought in the shipyards that produced the largest sailing vessels to ever ply the lake.
