Program Description:

Few people realize that many Irish immigrants first disembarked in the United States in the Lake Champlain port cities of Plattsburg and Whitehall, New York, and in St. Albans and Burlington, Vermont. As a consequence, like New York and Boston, the Champlain lake ports became important centers of Irish settlement. Vince Feeney outlines the importance of Lake Champlain to Irish emigration to America. Feeney is a long time adjunct professor of Irish history at UVM, author of numerous articles on Irish and Irish American history and currently completing a history of the Irish in Vermont.
