Program Description:
In this talk, Dr. Michael Sherman not only presents a synthesis of previously published research but also examines some neglected primary sources to describe the varied picture of the Vermont homefront during the Civil War. A rare cache of letters to a soldier from members of the Morse family of Wolcott, gives us a close view of life in rural Lamoille County. An account by Lydia E. White of Topsham of her day collecting money and goods for the Sanitary Commission, gives us a sample of attitudes towards the war as well as the ways ordinary citizens contributed to the maintenance and comfort of the young men they sent off to fight. The record books of the three military hospitals in Vermont provide us an extraordinarily detailed view of the comings and going of military personnel in Vermont and of relations between the civilian and military populations during the war.
