Drawing on extensive research in rural Vermont, Marc Boglioli, Ph.D. Candidate Cultural Anthropology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, discusses some of the vexing emergent questions associated with the changing role of gender in American hunting, such as: Why are women increasingly participating in an activity that is often considered to be a hyper-masculine anachronism? Do men and women share common sentiments regarding their relationships with the animals they kill? Do all-male deer camps constitute misogynistic social environments comparable to the men's houses encountered in anthropological texts? Do male hunters approve of female hunters? Among other issues, Boglioli also discusses the implications of his research for ecofeminism, violence against women, animal protectionism, and wildlife management.
