Program Description:

Taiwan has stood up was a key phrase in President Chen Shui-bian's inaugural speech of May 20, 2000. This land has weathered colonial rule, years of poverty, and times of political high pressure, but it has always come through unscathed and made its own way. Taiwan promoted agriculture and then developed a thriving industrial sector. First it seemed that nearly everything was "made in Taiwan;" now this land is poised to become a "green silicon island." Taiwan has not only stepped out to become an integral part of the hi-tech network, it has headed out on the global Internet. This documentary captures a small part of the history of Taiwan, this remarkable "platform," from the past to present. It faithfully reflects the unflattering realities of the past, yet these do not detract from Taiwan's overall splendor.
