Program Description:

For over a century - from 1854, the year the Republican Party was organized, until 1958 - Vermonters never failed to elect Republicans to state and national office, and every four years until 1964 they returned a slate of electors pledged to that party's presidential candidate. The Vermont GOP was trumpeted as the star that never set in the Republican Party's political firmament. Vermont gloried in having been the only state never to desert the party in a presidential election and during the New Deal prided itself as a lonely Republican eminence. This seminar suggests forces and individuals that gave rise to the party and its century-long exercise of political hegemony as well as the socioeconomic forces and internal rivalries that eventually led to its diminished authority. Presented by Samuel B. Hand, Emeritus, History, UVM.
