Program Description:

Narrated by the incomparable Willem Lange--New England's premier storyteller--this lively program explores the enduring cultural and literary ingredients of fables, myths, and folk tales from around the world. The Symphony illustrates the marvelous enhancement of stories through music with Prokofiev's classic Peter & the Wolf and Bizet's colorful opera Carmen, set in Spain, but originally written in French.

The VSO also performs Vermont composer Derrik Jordan's tribute to the Quadricentennial, "Odzihozo and the Lake."  This re-telling of an Abenaki creation story is narrated by Carolyn Hunt (in full Abenaki regalia). Husband Rick (whose artwork was chosen for last year's VPR mug) creates a spontaneous mural onstage to accompany the music. The program ends with inspiration and creativity, as an original student composition brings a fractured fairy tale to life.  "Wolf School Drop Out," a hilarious update on "The Three Little Pigs," was written and composed by students from North Country Union High School.
