UVM's early history, teaching science at early UVM, natural philosophyProgram Description:
In 1807, when the university of Vermont had only one faculty member in addition to the president, a major purchase of a state-of-the-art scientific apparatus was made by the young institution. The answers to questions such as "why this purchase?" and "how could the university afford it?" and "how was it used?" provide clues to the nature of the science teaching of the time, to the university's aspirations, and to some aspects of its early history.
