Program Description:

Marc Boglioli discusses how hunters in rural Vermont explain a relationship with the natural world that is simultaneously affectionate, respectful, violent, and consumptive. Boglioli argues that the practices of many rural Vermont hunters are grounded in a discourse of interdependent human/nature relations which at its core recognizes the irrevocable, life-sustaining connection of humans and nature. This interpretation of hunting in Vermont challenges an important theoretical assumption found in many studies on human/nature relations that posits a rigid dichotomy between earth-friendly indigenous populations and environmentally insensitive white populations. Boglioli discusses the negative consequences of this dichotomy for both the discipline of anthropology and American environmentalism.
