Program Description:
Jane Beck, Director Emeritus of the Vermont Folklife Center, discusses writing the narrative of Alec Turner's journey from slavery to freedom as told by his daughter Daisy, born in Grafton, Vt., in 1883. The story is a multigenerational saga that spans two centuries and three continents and encompasses privilege, shipwreck, rescue, life in Africa, enslavement, escape, freedom, and a farm, which became the family center, on a Vermont hilltop.
