Program Description:

In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River and visited the Native American village of Hochelaga on Montreal Island. His account provides an invaluable description of a moment in time for a village and a people who, by Samuel Champlain's voyage of 1603, had disappeared. The history and fate of the people archaeologists refer to as the St. Lawrence Iroquoians has fascinated scholars for decades. Recent studies in Alburgh, Vermont, indicate that part of the story lies buried in the northern Champlain Valley.
