Program Description:

Vincent Feeney, author of Finnigans, Slaters  & Stonepeggers: A History of the Irish in Vermont offers a presentation on the story of the thousands of Irish immigrants who poured into Vermont following the great potato famine of the 1840s. They arrived just as the Green Mountain State was undergoing a mini industrial revolution—a revolution based on railroad construction, the quarrying of slate and marble, and on textile production. By 1870 Vermont’s population was about 15 per cent Irish, with the percentage being significantly higher in some areas. Rutland Town, for example, was about 35 per cent Irish in 1870.
