Program Description:

Irish immigrants contributed mightily to building the state of Vermont in the 19th century. They played an important role in Vermont's quarry works, particularly in Rutland, Fair Haven, Castleton, and Dorset. The "Bolton Railroad War" was Vermont's first significant labor strike (1846), which involved 300 Irish families. A harbinger of many battles between labor and management, the event represents the confluence of a variety of forces which have shaped U.S. history and continue to affect us today. Presented by Vincent Feeney and Peter Konkle.
