What about our most hallowed political institution--town meeting? When political participation is not protected by the privacy of the polling booth, do women participate equally? Does open participatory democracy discriminate or empower? Is the position of women improving or declining? Do some kinds of towns treat women better than others? Thanks to the work of students from Saint Michael's College (1969-1974) and UVM (1976-1999), Political Science Professor Frank Bryan is now able to draw together three decades of evidence which will answer these and other questions about the role of women in direct democracy.
