Program Description:

When the American Civil War concluded, the returning Vermont troops proudly carried north their tattered flags. These colors were first displayed alongside earlier returned standards in the State House, but open exhibition proved hazardous, for portions of the flags fell victim to souvenir hunters. To preserve the colors from further material loss, they were stored for public viewing in glass cases where they were subjected to damage from dust, heat, and light. This circumstance remained unchanged for over a century. From the end of the Civil War in 1865 until 1996, there was no concerted effort to research the Civil War battle flag collection, which remained a visual, but neglected, segment of Vermont's rich military history. Recently, with the assistance of the Vermont Historical Society's Weston A. Cate, Jr., Research Fellowship, Donald Wickman has undertaken the project during which he has discovered much hidden primary information and stories relating to these shot-torn colors.
