Program Description:

Drawing from her book THE FAR TRAVELER, Nancy Marie Brown tells the story of Gudrid, a Viking woman who came to the New World 500 years before Columbus. Sister-in-law of Leif Eriksson, who discovered America in about the year 1000 AD, Gudrid tried to set up a colony on the shores of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Archaeologists have found remains of the Vikings' winter camp at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland, and signs pointing to a summer camp beside the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. There, according to the medieval Icelandic sagas, the Vikings met the native peoples they called "skraelings," or "skin-wearers," ancestors of the Algonquin Indians.
