Program Description:
The flood of November 3rd and 4th, 1927, stands as the greatest disaster in Vermont history. Devastation occurred throughout the state, with 1,285 bridges lost as well as countless numbers of homes and buildings destroyed and hundreds of miles of roads and railroad tracks washed out. Property losses were estimated at $30 million - a staggering sum in those days. Even worse, the flood waters claimed eighty-four lives, including that of then Vermont Lt. Gov. S. Hollister Jackson. Few towns escaped the rampaging flood waters that swept through Vermont seventy-five years ago, but the hardest hit area was most likely the Winooski Valley, where the majority of the population lived. In this program, speakers address the immediate repercussions and long-term implications of this watershed in Vermont
