Program Description:

Vermont is celebrated for its 1777 constitutional abolition of adult slavery. Subsequent state legislation outlawed all slavery and out-of-state sale of slaves (1786) and the kidnapping and sale of minors (1806). Nonetheless, slavery existed in Vermont in the colonial and early statehood eras. In this seminar Ray Zirblis explores the nature and extent of Vermont slavery, considers patterns of ownership and emancipation, and compares anti-slavery rhetoric and action.
