Program Description:

In 1969 the Vermont Historical Society (VHS) made a commitment to publish a one-volume history of Vermont. With the recent publication of Freedom and Unity: A History of Vermont, the VHS has made good on its promise to provide readers with a comprehensive survey, incorporating primary resources and recent research and commentary on Vermont' s past. The book provides an expansive view of Vermont history from the geological events that shaped the state to civil unions and the most recent version of education funding. Authors Michael Sherman, and P. Jeffrey Potash discuss the research and writing of the book, comment on some of their choices and purposes, and read selections from this newest addition to the surprisingly large bookshelf of works about the history of our little state. Michael Sherman is professor of liberal studies at Vermont College of The Union Institute & University, Montpelier. He is the editor of Vermont History, the journal of the Vermont Historical Society, has edited several books on Vermont history and government, and published articles on Vermont history and other topics. Gene Sessions (who was unable to attend the seminar) is professor emeritus of history at Norwich University, Northfield, and a former editor of Vermont History. He was a coeditor of Vermont Voices, 1609 through the 1990s: A Documentary History of the Green Mountain State (1999) and is the author and editor of many publications on Vermont history. P. Jeffrey Potash is codirector of the Center for System Dynamics at the Vermont Commons School, South Burlington, and the author of Vermont's Burned Over District: Patterns of Community Development and Religious Activity, 1761-1850 (1991) and many other articles on Vermont history.
