Program Description:

Drought is a cyclical component of every environment, including humid continental climates like Vermont's. Its effects vary depending upon its duration, severity, and the nature of the impacted region. Vermont is one of about half a dozen states for which no official plan exists to mitigate against this recurring hazard. By quantifying the characteristics of the 1998-1999 event (and, to a lesser extent, the 1994-1995 drought), this research lays the foundation upon which mitigative strategies can be explored. Lesley-Ann Dupigny-Giroux's research interests revolve around the issue of climate variability, especially here in Vermont. She has examined a number of weather hazards and extremes (e.g., the ice storm of 1998, flooding in central Vermont in 1998, and the most recent drought) to determine their characteristics, historical significance, and mitigative strategies that need to be implemented to reduce economic losses.
