Using data from Hardwick's 1900 and 1910 census manuscripts, Elizabeth H. Dow explores how the rural assumptions about women's work played out in an industrializing community that furnished no factory in which women could work. She also discusses how homemakers provided a fundamental part of the industrial infrastructure, as well as a safety net for the local tax base.
