Program Description:

In this research seminar, historians Deborah Clifford and Nicholas Clifford consider two aspects of the history of the Great Vermont Flood of 1927 and its aftermath. First, they try to show how disaster can be used to bring a place and a time into sharp focus, while simultaneously illuminating the larger questions of the day. Here, what might simply be seen as a piece of local history becomes a way of considering the great changes that marked the 1920s. And second, on a personal level, their study has been an example of collaborationist history. In their talk they address how they have profited from their backgrounds in different historical fields.
