Program Description:

UVM teaching Assistant Todd Hannahs presents his case for preserving underwater historical sites in Lake Champlain for future archaeological work. This talk explores how these resources have been addressed historically, examines the current thinking, and suggests strategies for the future. As more wrecks come to light each year, pressure has increased to use these artifacts in a variety of ways: underwater historic parks, raised to the surface for display, or preserved in place for further study. While submerged cultural resources often require specific treatment strategies, they also are part of the larger pool of historic resources. Historic preservation has a well developed methodology for treating cultural resources, yet the field has been largely unwilling to "get its feet wet" in Lake Champlain. These methods, in conjunction with other disciplines, can offer useful approaches to managing these often delicate and irreplaceable resources.
