Program Description:
The histories of the Mary Fletcher Hospital, which opened in January 1879, and the Fanny Allen Hospital, which started fifteen years later in October 1894, are fairly well documented. However, the beginnings of the Bishop DeGoesbriand Hospital, which opened its doors much later in September 1924, are not as well recorded. In this illustrated presentation, Suzanne Forest Ferland provides a look at the interaction of these three institutions and how they contributed to the survival of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She also discusses the roles played by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington and the Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph in that period.
