Program Description:

From 1909 to 1913 the 10th Cavalry Regiment, made up of African American enlisted men and white officers, was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen in Colchester, Vermont. The 10th was one of four regiments made up of African American soldiers known as "buffalo soldiers." These regiments served in major Indian campaigns in the West and in the wars in Cuba and in the Philippines. This talk explores buffalo-soldier contributions to national expansion across the continent and beyond, looks at the unusual conditions of their service, and examines the lives of the men and their families. It also looks at relations between the soldiers and Indians, modern commemoration of their role, and the mythology that has grown up around them. Presented by Frank Schubert.
