Program Description:

There are over 4,000 women living in Vermont who have faced breast cancer (data from the Vermont Mammography Registry). In fact, women with a history of breast cancer are the largest disease group in the cancer survivor community. Many of these women have survived more than five years and are in the care of their primary care physician. In the era of managed care, primary care physicians serve as gatekeepers to referral and payment for physical, psychological, and social services. Women who have experienced breast cancer have specific needs that have arisen from having had the disease. The goal of this research was to identify these needs and how primary care providers are or should be addressing them. The researchers hope that this information will be useful to women who have faced breast cancer, women who will be diagnosed in the future, and practitioners who provide services for these women. Presented by Berta Geller, Family Practice, UVM and Mary Canales, Nursing, UVM.
