Program Description:

This project is a social history of early 19th-century rural women's lives as revealed through the journal of Phebe Orvis Eastman, a young Quaker bride living on the New York frontier. The 10-year chronicle, begun in 1820, contains the daily details of her work, experiences, and, unique for its time, a wealth of personal observations. Through the details of her life as they are presented in the journal we have an unusual opportunity to revisit a world that we can only see "through a glass darkly."
