Program Description:

“The dinner table.” It sounds inviting -- unless it’s the backdrop to a business meal or even worse, a job interview.

“I don’t think a lot of students my age have been in situations where they need to act a certain way at a meal,” said Katy Lynn Wood, a senior Business School student concentrating accounting.

UVM School of Business Administration students put their dinner table knowledge to the test during the annual Etiquette Event. The School hosted the three-course meal as part of its Career and Professional Development.

“It’s beneficial for our students because as they enter the world, it’s important to make others feel at ease and learning proper business etiquette is a wonderful skill to have,” said Sue Schlom, Career and Professional Development Advisor at the School of Business.

Skills and education can get students an interview, Schlom said. But it’s a competitive job market and when all else is equal between two candidates, table manners can make or break you.

Etiquette is not just for the dinner table. Students learned how to mix and mingle with ease and how to write the proper thank you letter.
