February 7, 2017

On Friday, January 27, the Media Factory held their annual Producer Party - a celebration of the producers and community partners who created videos for RETN and VCAM, contributed to the public media community, and took leadership in launching our new low-power radio station, WBTV-LP. It was a terrific opportunity to gather and recognize the individuals that make the Media Factory community, and the public media channels, what they are.

Each year, RETN gives an award to the best community partner - an organization that collaborates with us to support public media, and create new opportunities to engage the public. The Burlington Writers Workshop partnered with us to launch StoryCraft: "A Way with Words" featuring writers Jensen Beach and Kerrin McCadden, and their 2nd annual "Stories By The Fire," a winter-themed storytelling event at Hotel VT. Both events created a venue to experience Vermont storytellers sharing their work, and gave us new opportunities to amplify local artists. Danielle Thierry, the Executive Director of Burlington Writers Workshop accepted the Community Partner award and said a few kind words.

RETN awarded our Lifelong Learner trophy to Mark Cline Lucey, a teacher at Vermont Commons School who has a history of building an appreciation for media making to his students. Each year, Mark's students come to the Media Factory to learn the the basics of video production, and then return to their school and community to produce their own stories. Working indpendently and mentoring his students, he has produced more than 50 videos. Here's Mark's speech (recorded, as he was with another group of students in Belize during the awards ceremony!):

This year, Mark is taking a sabbatical in order to study media production further. We can't wait to see what he creates, and who he inspires this year!

VCAM and WBTV-LP had awards of their own, too. Congratulations to the following individuals and groups for their contributions to public media:

VCAM Robert L. Chapman Award - Green Mountain Veterans for Peace
VCAM Staff Award - Ken French
Dr. Alfred C. “Tuna” Snyder Award - James Lockridge
WBTV Volunteer of the Year Award - Dom Berrini

And a huge thanks to all our community producers and partners for making 2016 a great year for the Media Factory! We look forward to working with you in 2017!
